This thing called Paleo
Well here we are. I’m the petite girl trying to alter her diet, so with that comes many questions, comments and eye rolls. I feel you. I’m doing the same thing.
Why Paleo? For me it’s not about dropping pounds, because as an already small-framed person, that’s the least thing I need to do. It’s about embracing a healthier lifestyle and tackling a now seven year journey of being labeled as having Hypothyroidism. I’ve struggled to maintain normal TSH levels and often find myself fluctuating between the high and low end of the lab spectrum, even when my medication has not been altered. As you can imagine, it sends my body in utter shock and I’ve reached a point where I’m tired of handing out money to doctors who just want to mask my symptoms... and not run the entire thyroid panel! I’ve set some goals to take better care of myself and after thinking long and hard for six months, I decided to give the holistic approach a chance. I am seeing a wonderful PA who is eager to help me determine the triggers of my thyroid disorder, which landed me here. To Paleo. A DIET. And not just any diet, but a severely strict one. I’m learning every day and have already screwed up, because who would ever consider a chickpea a bean!? 🙄
The point of this lifestyle/diet change is to cleanse my body of toxins and decrease inflammation, which is a major trigger for autoimmune diseases. I’m a firm believer that foods play an essential role to our wellbeing, even though I’m that girl that craves sweets like nobody’s business. So for at least 30 days, I’ve committed to changing my eating habits so I can feel healthier and determine why my levels are inconsistent... in addition to running other tests to see if there are signs there too.
I want to stay committed to this journey, because there are great rewards to being and feeling healthy. Though, this level of “hangry” brings out all sorts of frustration when I would do anything for a gooey non-Paleo chocolate chip cookie! With that said, I want to share this process with you and highlight what I’ve done to prepare and meal plan. I’ll give you all the ins and outs and highlight my mess-ups too, and hope it helps you if you ever decide to board this train!
I am currently in week two of this madness and I can say that it is getting easier. I certainly feel less bloated and I’ve had more energy over the past few days. Now that the shock is over, I’m ready to embrace the rest of this commitment.
I am preparing my meal tracker and will be sharing my food staples with you after I conquer this week! Stay tuned and please hold me accountable. I want to stay the course, because I am almost halfway through this adventure!
Let me know what questions you have and what you would like to know about this process. I am no expert by any means, but who said we can’t figure this Paleo thing out together!?
